Security Experts at MicroWorld Technologies advise
Enterprises to play down the paranoia created over
the recent news reports on some variants of Vanbot
(also known as Rinbot) spreading like a pandemic in
various organizations.
In the last four days, there were several reports
of Rinbot Worm spreading in networks of many business
houses and media firms. According to a news story,
Turner Broadcasting System, a division of Time Warner
and parent company of CNN, confirmed its networks
were infected with Rinbot.
Star Tribune and the St. Paul Pioneer Press were
two of a dozen other media firms hit by the malware,
explaining why Vanbot grabbed headlines in the mainstream
media. There were also reports about government offices
in the Gogebic County of Michigan being infected with
this Worms variants.
Vanbot is NOT a monstrous worm that will wipe
off every piece of data in your computer, render some
programs unusable in the system or turn every desktop
icon into a picture of rhinoceros, says Govind
Rammurthy, CEO of MicroWorld Technologies.
Yes, it is a Backdoor Worm that can be used
to convert computers into spam sending zombies, but
any advanced AntiVirus software like eScan can prevent
the entry of this worm into the network in the first
place. And in the event of an infection, a centralized
AntiVirus system can clean the entire network in a
matter of few minutes. As always, applying security
patches for software and Operating Systems and implementing
firewalls for organizational networks should be on
the top of every IT managers Priority list,
Govind Rammurthy points out.
Vanbot spreads in networks by exploiting a vulnerability
in Microsofts Windows Server Service, which
was fixed in August 2006 and a flaw in Symantec AntiVirus
software, patched in last June. It also tries to copy
itself to network shares by trying a long list of
common probable passwords like 007, 12345, access,
admin, control, database, db1234, domain, exchange,
george, guest, hello, internet, love and many more.
Meanwhile, the creator of the Worm seems to be basking
in all the notoriety that the Vanbot has generated
over the last few days. The malware writer has started
to include some vendetta laden shout-outs against
some Security research institutes and AntiVirus firms
inside the code of his newly released Worm variants.
Many of them are abusive and personalized attacks
against individuals working in these organizations,
even as one variant offered a strange apology for
crippling hospital networks.
