Its come-back time for some of the old world
viruses. The National Computer Virus Emergency Response
Center of China, a governmental agency, has raised the
alert about two virus variants, which are expected to
hit the country from February 6 to 12. The original
variant of this worm was first detected in August 2001.
The computer viruses known as "Kompu" and
"Happytime" are expected to attack China next
week, but the damage will be limited, predicted the
agency on Sunday. The worm has its origins in Estonia
and appears with the messages "Mul on paha tuju!"
and "Tahan kommi", which mean "I am in
bad mood" and "Give me some candy". Happytime
can spell sad times for users by eliminating .exe and
.dll files in the computer.
The worm, written in Visual Basic, circulates via emails
in HTML format or plain text message with an HTML file
attached. The former will execute automatically upon
opening the message where the latter waits for the user
to open the attachment. Upon each run, the worm adds
up a counter in the system registry, and when it reaches
value 366, it starts spreading via mass mailing.
China is just back from a week-long spring festival
and from Monday computer users are likely to get hit
by the worm via emails. It is also found that, if the
sum of the day and month is 13, the worm picks up .EXE
and .DLL files destroys them in a series.
