All government departments have been
put on a high alert after the presence of a Trojan
was detected in computer networks of various Government
departments of India, says media reports. Security
experts from AntiVirus and Content Security solution
provider, MicroWorld Technologies inform that the
threat is real and poses a clear and present danger.
The media report says the Trojan in question is spreading
among targeted networks with the help of an email
attachment named as Cabnote, pretending
that it is a document from the cabinet or the ministry
and thus tricking the recipients to open it.
Inadequate protection for networks and low level
of security awareness among a significant number of
users can fuel the spread of this Trojan across an
entire department, posing a serious threat to the
data integrity of these administrative bodies,
says Manoj Mansukhani, Head Technology and
Marketing, MicroWorld Technologies.
Arti Taru, Assistant Manager R&D, explains
that a Trojan is a program or a file that may look
harmless otherwise, but carries a malicious component
in it. Regular Trojans do not replicate on their own
but can be highly harmful to other applications and
can steal your confidential Information.
Ms Taru says two of the stealthiest varieties of
Trojans are Keyloggers and Backdoors. Keyloggers remain
silent in a compromised computer and capture usernames
and passwords when a user logs on to websites of Governments,
Business Houses, Banks and Credit Card Companies and
the Information is then mailed to the author of the
Malware. Some of the more evolved ones can take screenshots
and capture mouse clicks too!
Backdoors are no less in their ability to spy on
organizational networks. This Malware is hooked into
the victims system by an intruder, in order
to gain Access and Control of it. Using the Backdoor,
the attacker can operate a compromised computer like
his own desktop and execute commands.
The comprehensive AntiVirus and Content Security
software from MicroWorld Technologies eScan ensures
that these threats are defeated at the network layer
itself with its unique MWL technology, and its fastest
and largest malware protection database. MailScan
on the other hand safeguards the entire email system
of organizations at the mail gateway, while keeping
all sorts spam and phishing mails at bay.
The current attack on governmental networks
is not an isolated incident as theres a definite
shift in the global malware landscape from destruction
to espionage over the last few years. Anyone with
the malicious intent of hacking into a targeted network
can do it so easily with these new breed of malwares,
given the network is not protected adequately and
proactively, points out Manoj Mansukhani.
